Well pump replacement cost by type
| Pump type | Installed price | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Shallow-well jet pump | $400–$1,800 | Pump sits above ground |
| Deep-well jet pump (25–100 ft) | $700–$2,500 | Above-ground pump for deeper wells |
| Submersible pump (typical well) | $1,000–$2,500 | Pump sits in the well; the most common |
| Submersible pump, deep well (300+ ft) | $2,500–$6,000 | Cost climbs with depth |
Pump type is the biggest cost driver, and well depth is the second. Guides give different depth limits for each pump type, so ask your installer which one your well needs. Every foot below about 100 feet adds complexity, and replacements on wells deeper than 300 feet can run well above the typical range. Constant-pressure systems, which keep water pressure steady throughout the house, can top $4,000 installed.
Replace the pressure tank at the same time?
If the pressure tank is aging, replace it while the contractor is on site. A tank replacement typically costs $300–$800, and bundling it adds only $200 to $500 compared with a separate visit. A pump that switches on and off every few seconds usually points to a waterlogged tank, failed bladder or incorrect pressure switch settings rather than the pump itself, so check the tank first.
Repair or replace?
Replace the pump if it's over about 10 years old, needs repeated repairs, has significantly reduced flow, or repair costs would exceed half the cost of replacement. Smaller parts are cheaper to fix:
| Part | Cost |
|---|---|
| Pressure switch | $25–$100 |
| Pressure tank bladder | $50–$100 |
| Pump motor | $500–$1,000 |
| Pitless adapter | $150–$350 |
Other costs
- Emergency or after-hours service: $150–$500.
- Permits vary by location and aren't priced here.
Questions to ask before you hire
- Is my well jet or submersible, and how deep is the pump set?
- Does the price include the drop pipe, wire and pressure switch, or just the pump?
- Should the pressure tank or pitless adapter be replaced while the pump is out?
- What horsepower pump are you installing, and why?
- What does the warranty cover on the pump and on labor?

Common questions about well pump replacement costs
How much does well pump replacement cost?
A typical job (submersible pump, typical well) comes to about $1,800 nationally, within a range of $1,000 to $2,500. Use the calculator above to adjust for your state, the options you choose and any extras.
How much does a submersible well pump replacement cost?

Where do these prices come from?
They come from 8 published cost pages from 7 publishers, last checked Oct 2, 2026. We report what those pages say and do not invent figures; the table above shows each source.
How does my state change the estimate?
The labor part of the price is scaled by the average wage for the relevant trade in your state, using Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Materials and equipment are not adjusted.
Why might a contractor's quote differ from this estimate?
A quote reflects your specific scope, access, local demand and what the contractor includes. Ask for line items rather than a single total so you can compare bids on the same basis.
