Tree removal cost by height

Price per tree, labor and hauling the trunk away, captured 2026-10-08
Tree heightInstalled priceGood to know
Small tree, up to 30 ft$175–$450Most crews can drop it in sections without a crane
Medium tree, 30 to 60 ft$450–$1,050The most common job on a residential lot
Large tree, 60 to 80 ft$850–$1,350Rigging and a bigger crew
Very large tree, over 80 ft$1,200–$2,000Often needs a crane or a bucket truck

Height is the main price driver in every guide we read, and the four guides agree closely on the shape of the table even where the dollar figures differ. The prices are for cutting the tree down and removing the trunk and brush. Grinding the stump is a separate line, below. The labor share is adjusted for your state.

What changes the price

  • Access. A tree beside the house, a fence or power lines has to be taken down in pieces. Angi puts tight or unsafe sites at 25%-50% more.
  • Condition. Dead, leaning or diseased trees are riskier to climb. Angi lists a diseased tree at $400-$900.
  • Timing. Emergency and same-day jobs cost 2 to 3 times the standard rate.
  • How many trees. HomeGuide says the per-tree cost drops 10% to 25% when several trees are done in one visit.
  • Where you live. The calculator adjusts the labor share for your state's tree trimmer wages.

Extras to expect

Common extras
ItemTypical costWhen it applies
Stump grinding$100–$450 per stumpYou want the stump gone, not left at ground level
Haul away logs and chips$70–$300The crew leaves the wood unless cleanup is in the quote
Crane$250–$600Very tall trees, or trees that cannot be dropped in sections
Permit$60–$150Only where your city requires one for removal

Some cities protect certain trees, and an arborist report can be required before a permit is issued; Angi lists one at about $860. Check with your city before you book.

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Does the price include cutting up and hauling away the wood, or only felling?
  • Is stump grinding included, and how deep will they grind?
  • Is the crew insured for property damage and workers' injuries?
  • Will a crane or bucket truck be needed, and is it in the price?
  • Who pulls the permit, if your city requires one?

Methodology and sources

We price each height group per tree from four published guides, take the middle of their lows, midpoints and highs, adjust the labor share for your state's tree trimmer wages, and price stump grinding, cleanup, a crane and a permit separately. Read how we estimate costs.

How much does tree removal cost?

Per tree, with labor and hauling the trunk away, a small tree (up to 30 ft) runs about $175–$450, a medium tree (30 to 60 ft) about $450–$1,050, a large tree (60 to 80 ft) about $850–$1,350 and a very large tree (over 80 ft) about $1,200–$2,000. Stump grinding is extra.

How much does large tree removal cost?

A large tree (60 to 80 ft) costs about $850–$1,350 and a very large one over 80 ft about $1,200–$2,000. A crane, when one is needed, adds about $250–$600.

How much does emergency tree removal cost?

Storm-damage and same-day calls cost 2 to 3 times the standard rate in the guides we read. For a medium tree that is about $1,130–$2,630, and one guide lists emergency jobs at $450-$5,000.

Where do these prices come from?

They come from 5 published cost pages from 5 publishers, last checked Oct 8, 2026. We report what those pages say and do not invent figures; the table above shows each source.

How does my state change the estimate?

The labor part of the price is scaled by the average wage for the relevant trade in your state, using Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Materials and equipment are not adjusted.

Why might a contractor's quote differ from this estimate?

A quote reflects your specific scope, access, local demand and what the contractor includes. Ask for line items rather than a single total so you can compare bids on the same basis.
