Furnace repair cost by problem

Price per repair, parts and labor, captured 2026-10-08
RepairInstalled priceGood to know
Flame sensor replaced$70–$250Often cleaned first; replaced if it keeps failing
Igniter replaced$95–$250A common wear part on modern furnaces
Blower motor capacitor replaced$100–$250A small part, mostly the visit
Gas valve replaced$200–$800Gas work, so a licensed technician
Control board replaced$300–$725Price depends on the furnace model
Draft inducer motor replaced$200–$1,100Pulls exhaust out of the furnace
Blower motor replaced$300–$1,050Variable-speed motors cost more
Heat exchanger replaced$1,000–$3,000A crack is a safety issue; consider replacement

These are national prices for one repair with parts and labor. The three guides agree on the order of the table more than on the exact dollars, because parts for the same repair differ by furnace model and brand. Some guides include the technician's trip charge in the price and some do not. The typical value sits between them, and you can add a separate service call below.

Repair or replace?

A furnace that fails once with a cheap part is usually worth fixing. The picture changes when the furnace is old, the repair is a heat exchanger or a control board, or it needs a second repair soon after the first. Compare the quote with a new furnace on the furnace replacement cost page, which prices a basic gas model at about $3,880–$6,700 installed. If the problem is the cooling side of a system, see AC repair cost.

What changes the price

  • The part. A sensor or igniter is small. A blower motor, board or heat exchanger is a larger part and a longer job.
  • Fuel and model. Gas, oil and electric furnaces use different parts, and newer high-efficiency furnaces have more electronics.
  • When you call. Nights, weekends and holidays cost more: about 1.75 times the weekday price in the guides that give a figure.
  • Service call fee. It is either folded into the repair or billed first and credited.
  • Where you live. The calculator adjusts the labor share for your state's HVAC technician wages.

Extras to expect

On top of the repair
ItemTypical cost
Separate diagnostic or service-call fee$75–$200
Night, weekend or holiday callAbout 1.75 times the weekday price

A yearly tune-up and inspection usually costs less than a repair and can catch a worn igniter or a dirty flame sensor before they fail on a cold night.

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Is there a service charge, and is it credited if you go ahead with the repair?
  • Does the price include the part, the labor and a warranty on both?
  • Is the repair likely to fix the problem, or are other parts worn too?
  • Is the heat exchanger cracked, and was a carbon monoxide test done?
  • If the furnace is old, what would a replacement cost?

Methodology and sources

We price each repair per visit from three published guides, take the middle of their lows, midpoints and highs, and adjust the labor share for your state's HVAC technician wages. Forbes Home repeats the Angi table, so it is not counted twice. Read how we estimate costs.

What each source reports

Common questions about furnace repair costs

How much does furnace repair cost?

A typical job (igniter) comes to about $170 nationally, within a range of $100 to $250. Use the calculator above to adjust for your state, the options you choose and any extras.

How much does each furnace repair cost?

Per repair, with parts and labor, a flame sensor costs about $70–$250, an igniter $95–$250, a control board $300–$725, a blower motor $300–$1,050 and a heat exchanger $1,000–$3,000.

How much does it cost to replace a furnace igniter?

About $95–$250 installed. Igniters wear out first on newer furnaces and are one of the most common calls.

How much does it cost to replace a flame sensor?

About $70–$250. A dirty flame sensor can often be cleaned for less, and cleaning is the first thing most technicians try.

How much does a furnace blower motor replacement cost?

About $300–$1,050. A variable-speed motor costs more than a single-speed one, and one guide puts the capacitor next to it at $100–$250.

How much does it cost to replace a furnace control board?

About $300–$725 for the board and the labor to fit it. Furnaces that are a decade old or more sometimes need a board that is no longer made.

How much does a heat exchanger replacement cost?

About $1,000–$3,000. A cracked heat exchanger is a safety problem, and at that price many owners compare it with a new furnace, which costs about $3,880–$6,700 installed for a basic gas model.

How much does emergency furnace repair cost?

Nights, weekends and holidays cost about 1.75 times a weekday visit, according to the two guides that price it. An igniter at night is about $170–$440, and a blower motor about $530–$1,840.

Is there a separate service call fee?

Many companies fold the diagnostic into the repair, and some charge about $75–$200 first and credit it if you go ahead. Ask before the technician arrives.

Where do these prices come from?

They come from 4 published cost pages from 3 publishers, last checked Oct 8, 2026. We report what those pages say and do not invent figures; the table above shows each source.

How does my state change the estimate?

The labor part of the price is scaled by the average wage for the relevant trade in your state, using Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Materials and equipment are not adjusted.

Why might a contractor's quote differ from this estimate?

A quote reflects your specific scope, access, local demand and what the contractor includes. Ask for line items rather than a single total so you can compare bids on the same basis.
