Click-lock or glue-down?

Click-lock planks snap together and float over the subfloor, with no adhesive. Professional labor for them runs about $1.50 to $3.00 per square foot, against $2.50 to $4.00 for glue-down. Glue-down planks are bonded directly to the subfloor, which makes for a very stable floor that suits high-traffic areas, but the installation takes longer and needs a carefully prepared subfloor. Floating floors can shift slightly under heavy furniture.

What makes a plank premium?

Premium planks have a rigid core, either stone plastic composite (SPC) or wood plastic composite (WPC), and a thicker wear layer. One retailer contrasts a thin, flexible product with a 6 mil wear layer against a rigid SPC product with a 27 mil wear layer. WPC typically costs 10% to 15% more than SPC. Professional labor alone runs $1.50 to $4.00 per square foot, which is what a do-it-yourselfer saves. Click-lock vinyl plank is among the easier floors to install yourself.

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Is the price for materials and labor, or labor only?
  • Which wear-layer thickness and core type is the plank?
  • Does the quote include removing the old floor, subfloor prep and underlayment?
  • Is it a floating or glue-down installation, and why?
  • Who moves the furniture, and are baseboards and transitions included?
