| Refrigerator sealed system (compressor) | $500–$1,250 | Compressor or refrigerant circuit |
Sources are inconsistent about whether a quoted repair price already includes the service call, so ask your technician what the quote covers.
The service call and what it covers
An appliance repair service call costs $70 to $130 for diagnostics and one hour of labor, according to HomeGuide, and technicians typically charge about $50 to $150 an hour after that. Many companies credit the diagnostic fee toward the repair if you approve the work, and some waive it entirely. Emergency call-outs cost more: HomeGuide puts them at $140 to $400, against $70 to $130 for a standard visit.
Repair or replace?
One widely used guideline is the 50% rule: if a repair would cost about half the price of a comparable new appliance, replacement is often the more economical choice. Compare any major repair quote with the price of a new one. If the repair costs much less than replacing it and the appliance is fairly new, fixing it is usually worth it.
Extras
- A second appliance on the same visit: one company charges $50 for each additional appliance on the same service call. Policies vary, so ask.
- Built-in and high-end appliances are not priced here: they usually need specialized parts and training, so get a quote from a technician authorized for the brand.
Questions to ask before you hire
- What is the service-call or diagnostic fee, and is it credited if I approve the repair?
- Is the quote a fixed price or hourly plus parts?
- Are the parts new or refurbished, and what is the warranty on parts and labor?
- What would you charge to look at a second appliance during the same visit?
- Is repair still worthwhile compared with the cost of a new one?
