Patio door cost by type
| Door or repair | Installed price |
|---|---|
| Replace one glass panel only | $450–$700 |
| Sliding door, vinyl or aluminum | $1,000–$3,000 |
| Sliding door, fiberglass | $1,500–$3,000 |
| Sliding door, wood or clad wood | $1,500–$4,000 |
| Hinged French doors (exterior) | $1,300–$5,500 |
Frame material drives most of the difference. Vinyl and aluminum are the most affordable; fiberglass costs more but insulates well and needs little upkeep; wood and clad-wood frames cost the most. Hinged French doors swing open and need clear floor space, and usually cost more than a slider of the same width.
Fogged or cracked glass? You may not need a new door
If the frame and rollers are sound and only one pane has failed, replacing that glass panel costs about $450–$700, a fraction of a new door. It's worth asking for a glass-only quote before agreeing to a full replacement. A new door makes more sense when the frame is rotted or warped, the track is damaged, or you want better energy performance than the old frame can offer.
What else adds to the price
- Old door removal and disposal: $100–$500, depending on size and access.
- Glass upgrades: Low-E, argon, laminated, soundproof or impact-rated glass all raise the door price. Impact-rated sliders for hurricane zones sit at the top of the range.
- Size and panels: three- and four-panel sliders and oversized openings cost more than a standard 6-foot 2-panel door.
- Changing the opening: widening or resizing the wall opening is structural work that can move the project well past the ranges above.
How long it takes
A straightforward replacement in the existing opening typically takes 3 to 6 hours, including removing the old door. Larger or custom doors take longer.
Questions to ask before you hire
- Is removal and disposal of the old door included?
- Could the glass alone be replaced instead?
- What glass package is quoted: Low-E, argon, tempered, impact-rated?
- How will you handle rot in the sill or subfloor if you find it?
- What's the labor warranty, separate from the manufacturer's?
