Deck repair cost by size of the job

Repair cost for the whole job, captured 2026-10-08
Size of the repair jobInstalled priceGood to know
Simple: loose boards, nails, small rot or mildew$100–$750A visit to fix a few things
Average: several boards, posts or stairs$800–$3,500Several boards, posts or stairs
Complex: structural, joists, ledger or major rot$2,500–$10,000Structural work, and the widest range

These are totals for repair work, with the labor share adjusted for your state's carpentry wages. The guides we read do not agree on prices per board or per square foot, so we price by the size of the job instead. A contractor's site visit will tell you which tier you are in.

What changes the price

Deck size, height and the wood or composite used matter, but the condition of the frame matters most. Replacing surface boards is quick, while rotted joists, posts or a loose ledger board where the deck meets the house are structural and can approach a rebuild. Hidden rot is common, so ask how the contractor handles damage found once boards come up.

Extra costs to expect

Common extras
ItemTypical costWhen it applies
Railing repair or replacement$500–$4,000Loose, broken or non-compliant railings
Cleaning and sealing$300–$1,500Protects the repaired wood
Pest control$200–$600If insects caused the damage

Minor repairs usually do not need a permit, but structural work can, so check with your town. If the repair costs close to what a new deck would, ask for a replacement quote too.

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Is the frame, ledger and footing sound, or only the surface?
  • What will you do if you find more rot once boards come up?
  • Does the quote include new fasteners and sealing?
  • Is a permit needed for this work?
  • Is it close enough to the cost of a new deck to compare quotes?

Methodology and sources

We price repair by job size from the sources, adjust the labor share for your state's carpentry wages, and price railings, sealing and pest control separately. Read how we estimate costs.
