Interior & Remodel Costs
Interior projects are priced by area, by finish level and by how much has to be torn out first. Material choice sets the range: basic and premium versions of the same floor, countertop or cabinet can differ by multiples. Demolition, subfloor and wall repair, and finishing details such as trim and paint, sit on top and are the usual reasons a final bill passes the first quote.
The calculators below cover kitchens and baths, flooring, walls and ceilings, and a few garage projects. Each one starts from a typical national job that you can adjust for your state, area and extras, and the table shows that starting point.

What drives the price
- Area and layout
- Square footage and room shape set the base. Many cuts, small rooms and odd layouts raise labor per square foot.
- Material grade
- Finish level is the largest lever. Builder-grade and high-end materials for the same room can differ by multiples, so decide on grade before you compare quotes.
- Demolition and prep
- Removing old flooring, cabinets or tile, and fixing the subfloor or walls underneath, is a separate cost that depends on what is found.
- Older homes
- In older houses, some materials may need testing before they are disturbed, which can add time and cost.
- Finishing details
- Trim, paint, fixtures, transitions and cleanup are easy to leave out of a quote and easy to underestimate.
Before you hire
- Decide on material and finish level first, so every contractor prices the same job.
- Ask whether demolition, disposal, subfloor or wall repair, trim, paint and cleanup are in the quote.
- Ask how the contractor handles surprises behind walls and under floors, and how changes are priced.
- For older homes, ask whether any testing is needed before work begins.
- Get the schedule and the payment milestones in writing before you sign.

Common questions about interior & remodel costs
Why do remodel budgets run over?
Common reasons are changing finishes midway, hidden damage found during demolition and items left out of the first quote. Ask for an itemized quote and keep a contingency for the unknowns.
Is it cheaper to supply my own materials?
Sometimes, but contractors may charge for handling, may not warranty materials you supply, and a wrong order can delay the job. Ask before you buy anything.
Should I price the whole room or each task separately?
Pricing the whole project from one contractor usually avoids gaps between trades. Using the calculators for each task shows which parts of the budget are largest.
