Retaining wall cost per square foot
| Material | Installed price | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Timber | $15–$30 | Among the lowest in cost |
| Concrete block | $15–$40 | Interlocking or cinder block, often with a stone or stucco face |
| Poured concrete | $20–$45 | Concrete cast in place, often reinforced with rebar |
| Natural stone | $20–$95 | Wide range depending on the stone and the mason |
| Gabion (wire baskets filled with stone) | $10–$40 | Wire baskets filled with stone |
Retaining walls are priced by the area of the wall face (length times height). A 4 foot high wall that is 50 feet long is 200 sq ft. Brick is not in the table because the guides disagree widely: HomeGuide puts it at $30 to $60 per square foot, while Angi and Fixr put it at $20 to $25.
Cost by wall size
| Wall | Timber | Concrete block | Poured concrete |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25 ft long, 2 ft high (50 sq ft) | $750–$1,500 | $750–$2,000 | $1,000–$2,250 |
| 25 ft long, 4 ft high (100 sq ft) | $1,500–$3,000 | $1,500–$4,000 | $2,000–$4,500 |
| 50 ft long, 4 ft high (200 sq ft) | $3,000–$6,000 | $3,000–$8,000 | $4,000–$9,000 |
| 100 ft long, 4 ft high (400 sq ft) | $6,000–$12,000 | $6,000–$16,000 | $8,000–$18,000 |
| 50 ft long, 6 ft high (300 sq ft) | $4,500–$9,000 | $4,500–$12,000 | $6,000–$13,500 |
What changes the price
- Height. Cost rises with the face area, and walls over about 4 feet usually need an engineer and a permit.
- Material. Timber is cheapest, stone and poured concrete cost the most.
- Access and slope. A wall on a steep slope or with no machine access takes more labor.
- Drainage. Water behind the wall is a common cause of failure, so ask how drainage is handled.
- Reinforcement. Steel rebar is used in concrete and tall block walls.
- Where you live. The calculator adjusts the labor share for your state's masonry wages.
Extras to expect
| Item | Typical cost | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Structural engineer | $350–$2,000 | Walls over about 4 feet |
| Building permit | $50–$450 | Varies by town |
| Waterproofing the back | $2–$10 per sq ft | Most masonry walls |
| Rebar reinforcement | $0.80–$2.50 per sq ft | Concrete and tall block walls |
Water behind a wall is often a drainage problem first. See French drain installation cost, and paver installation cost if the wall is part of a patio.
Questions to ask before you hire
- Does the wall need an engineer, and does the quote include the permit?
- How will water drain behind the wall?
- Is the price per square foot, per linear foot or a flat project price?
- What base and footing does the price include?
- What does the warranty cover if the wall leans or cracks?
Methodology and sources
We price each material per square foot of wall face from four published guides, take the middle of their lows, midpoints and highs, and adjust the labor share for your state's wages. Engineering, waterproofing, rebar and the permit are priced separately and off by default. Read how we estimate costs.

Common questions about retaining wall costs
How much does retaining wall cost?
A typical job (200 sq ft, concrete block) comes to about $5,600 nationally, within a range of $3,000 to $8,000. Use the calculator above to adjust for your state, the options you choose and any extras.
How much does a retaining wall cost?
By material, per square foot of wall face installed: timber $15–$30, concrete block $15–$40, poured concrete $20–$45, natural stone $20–$95 and gabion $10–$40. A 4 ft high, 50 ft long block wall is 200 sq ft, or $3,000–$8,000.
How much does a retaining wall cost per linear foot?
Multiply by the wall height. A 4 ft high wall costs about $60–$160 per linear foot in block, $60–$120 in timber and $80–$180 in poured concrete.
How much does a 4 ft by 25 ft retaining wall cost?
That is 100 sq ft of wall face, which costs $1,500–$4,000 in concrete block, $1,500–$3,000 in timber and $2,000–$4,500 in poured concrete.
What is the cheapest retaining wall?
Timber and gabion are the cheapest per square foot, at $15–$30 and $10–$40. Natural stone and poured concrete cost the most.
How much does a stone retaining wall cost?
Natural stone costs about $20–$95 per square foot. The range is wide because it depends on the type of stone and how it is laid.
Do I need an engineer or a permit for a retaining wall?
Usually for walls over about 4 feet high. A structural engineer costs about $350–$2,000 and a permit about $50–$450. Rules vary by town, so ask your building department.
How much does drainage and waterproofing add?
Waterproofing the back of the wall adds about $2–$10 per square foot. Drainage behind the wall is separate, and the French drain cost page prices it.
Is there a minimum charge for a retaining wall job?
Yes. HomeGuide puts the project minimum at $1,500 to $3,000, so a short wall can cost more per square foot than the table shows.
Where do these prices come from?
They come from 4 published cost pages from 4 publishers, last checked Oct 8, 2026. We report what those pages say and do not invent figures; the table above shows each source.
How does my state change the estimate?
The labor part of the price is scaled by the average wage for the relevant trade in your state, using Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Materials and equipment are not adjusted.
Why might a contractor's quote differ from this estimate?
A quote reflects your specific scope, access, local demand and what the contractor includes. Ask for line items rather than a single total so you can compare bids on the same basis.
