Paver installation cost per square foot
| Paver material | Installed price | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Concrete pavers | $8–$15 | The lowest-priced paver in these guides |
| Brick or clay pavers | $10–$20 | Classic look; priced above concrete |
| Natural stone pavers | $15–$50 | Sources disagree widely on natural stone |
These are installed prices per square foot, covering pavers, base preparation and labor, with the labor share adjusted for your state. Excavation, sealing and regrading are separate lines in the calculator because they only apply to some jobs. Enter your patio or walkway area for the project total.
What changes the price
The material sets the price, but the site does too: a yard that needs clearing, leveling or a deeper base takes more labor, and difficult materials such as bluestone, slate or flagstone take much longer to lay than interlocking concrete. Complex shapes, patterns and curves add time, and none of the guides we read puts one dollar figure on them, so ask for them as separate lines.
Extra costs to expect
| Item | Typical cost | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Excavation and old-surface removal | $1–$5 per sq ft | Replacing an old patio or clearing the site |
| Sealing and joint sand | $0.20–$3.25 per sq ft | Optional; the guides disagree widely on price |
| Regrading the yard | $1,000–$3,250 | Only for uneven or sloped ground |
Check with your town or HOA about permits and drainage rules before you start. Ask whether the installed price includes the base material, edging and joint sand, since the guides do not agree on what is bundled.
Questions to ask before you hire
- Is the price per square foot for pavers, base and labor together?
- How deep is the base, and what material is it?
- Does the quote include edging, joint sand and sealing?
- Who removes the old surface and hauls it away?
- How is drainage handled so water does not pool?
Methodology and sources
We price each paver material as an installed price per square foot, adjust the labor share for your state's construction wages, and price excavation, sealing and regrading separately. Read how we estimate costs.

Common questions about paver installation costs
How much does paver installation cost?
A typical job (280 sq ft of concrete pavers) comes to about $3,360 nationally, within a range of $2,240 to $4,200. Use the calculator above to adjust for your state, the options you choose and any extras.
Where do these prices come from?
They come from 3 published cost pages from 3 publishers, last checked Oct 8, 2026. We report what those pages say and do not invent figures; the table above shows each source.
How does my state change the estimate?
The labor part of the price is scaled by the average wage for the relevant trade in your state, using Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Materials and equipment are not adjusted.
Why might a contractor's quote differ from this estimate?
A quote reflects your specific scope, access, local demand and what the contractor includes. Ask for line items rather than a single total so you can compare bids on the same basis.
