Garbage disposal cost by size

Like-for-like replacement, unit and installation, captured 2026-09-27
Disposal sizeInstalled price
1/3 HP (light use)$150–$250
1/2 HP$230–$450
3/4 HP (most common)$275–$500
1 HP premium / quiet$400–$760

A 1/2 HP unit covers most small households, and 3/4 HP is the most common replacement choice for a family kitchen: quieter and better with tougher waste. 1/3 HP units suit light use only. Stainless steel grinding parts resist corrosion better than aluminum and usually last longer.

A fair price for a simple swap

Replacing a disposal where the drain and power are already in place is about 45 minutes to an hour of work, and labor typically runs $120–$220. A quote well above the range for your size needs a specific reason, such as new wiring, corroded pipes or a code-required air gap. Emergency weekend calls also carry premium rates, so scheduling during business hours saves money.

First-time installation costs more

If your kitchen has never had a disposal, the plumber has to modify the sink drain, and an electrician may need to add an outlet or a dedicated circuit, about $100–$250. Some local codes also require a dishwasher air gap ($90–$180). Homes on septic systems need a septic-safe model, which adds $50–$100 to the unit price.

Repair or replace?

Guides put a garbage disposal's lifespan at roughly 8 to 15 years, with many citing 10 to 12. Once a unit is 8 to 10 or more years old and has a burned-out motor, leaks from the body or has needed repeated repairs, guides generally recommend replacing it. A simple jam or clog is usually a repair job.

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Is this a direct replacement, or will you need to change the drain or wiring?
  • Is haul-away of the old unit included?
  • Can I buy the unit myself? Plumber-supplied units often carry a markup.
  • Does my area require a dishwasher air gap?
