Estimate your gas line repair cost

Your project
Extra work
Safety first. If you smell gas, leave the building and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. A leak outside your property line, such as in the street, is the utility's responsibility. For a leak inside your property line, most municipalities require a licensed professional to repair it before gas is turned back on at the meter.

Gas line repair prices vary with how accessible the pipe is and how much of it needs replacing. Two national averages cited by cost guides are $400 and $598 for a typical repair, which sit inside the ranges above.

Replacing pipe by the foot

When a stretch of pipe has to be replaced, guides put the cost at roughly $15 to $35 per linear foot installed, including removing the old line. Older black iron or galvanized steel pipe costs more to repair or replace. If the pipe is underground, digging trenches costs about $5 to $12 per linear foot, and one guide puts the high end for an underground leak needing extensive excavation at $2,300.

Pressure test, permit and other extras

Common extras
ItemTypical costWhy
Pressure test$75–$200Confirms the line is leak-free before gas is restored
Leak detection$75–$300Finds the source when it isn't obvious
Permit$50–$300Required for gas work beyond routine appliance connection in most places
Emergency callout$150–$400After-hours surcharge on top of the repair

A hydrostatic test, which uses water pressure and is sometimes used on buried or older lines, costs about $150 to $500 and takes 12 to 24 hours. Licensed plumbers and gas fitters commonly charge about $45 to $150 per hour.

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Are you licensed for gas work in this city, and do you pull the permit?
  • Does the price include the pressure test and restoring gas to the home?
  • How will you find the leak, and how much of the line is being replaced?
  • What pipe material will you use, and does it meet local code?
  • What does the warranty cover?
