Chimney liner cost by material

Total installed price for a typical single flue, captured 2026-10-08
Liner materialInstalled priceGood to know
Aluminum (gas appliances only)$625–$2,250Gas appliances only; the cheapest option
Stainless steel$900–$4,000The most common choice for wood and gas
Clay tile (wood fires only)$2,000–$3,500Wood fires only; only one guide prices it as a total
Cast-in-place (poured)$2,000–$7,000Poured in the flue; the highest range and a single source

These are total installed prices for one flue, with the labor share adjusted for your state's sheet metal wages. The guides we read price liners per square foot or per foot without a flue length, so we use the total-installed figures instead. A tall chimney, a wide or oddly shaped flue, or a hard roof to reach pushes the price toward the top of the range.

What changes the price

The fuel your appliance burns decides which liner you may use: aluminum is for gas only, and wood fires need stainless steel, clay or cast-in-place. Flue height and width, roof pitch and the condition of the chimney also matter. A damaged chimney may need repair before a liner goes in, and the guides price that separately.

Extra costs to expect

Common extras
ItemTypical costWhen it applies
Chimney inspection$150–$450Usually done before relining
Chimney cleaning$250–$255Before installation
Permit$100–$150Some towns require one

Insulation, a new cap and masonry repairs are not priced here. Ask the installer to confirm the liner size matches your appliance and that the installation meets local code.

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Which liner material is right for my fuel and appliance?
  • Is the price for materials, labor and a new cap together?
  • Does the quote include insulation if the liner calls for it?
  • Is the chimney sound, or does it need repairs first?
  • What is the warranty on the liner and the work?

Methodology and sources

We use total installed prices by liner material, adjust the labor share for your state's sheet metal wages, and price inspection, cleaning and the permit separately. Read how we estimate costs.

What each source reports

Our estimate does not rely on any single page. This table lists each page we used and the figures it reports, so you can see where the ranges come from.

Common questions about chimney liner costs

How much does chimney liner cost?

A typical job (stainless steel liner) comes to about $2,200 nationally, within a range of $900 to $4,000. Use the calculator above to adjust for your state, the options you choose and any extras.

Where do these prices come from?

They come from 3 published cost pages from 3 publishers, last checked Oct 8, 2026. We report what those pages say and do not invent figures; the table above shows each source.

How does my state change the estimate?

The labor part of the price is scaled by the average wage for the relevant trade in your state, using Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Materials and equipment are not adjusted.

Why might a contractor's quote differ from this estimate?

A quote reflects your specific scope, access, local demand and what the contractor includes. Ask for line items rather than a single total so you can compare bids on the same basis.
