Garage door repair cost by problem

Price per repair visit, parts and labor, captured 2026-10-08
RepairInstalled priceGood to know
Safety sensor (photo-eye) fix or replacement$100–$300Often just a realignment
Broken or frayed cable$100–$350A snapped cable usually means the springs are worn too
Door off its track, or a bent track$100–$350Stop using the door until it is fixed
Rollers replaced$100–$220Cheap parts; most of the price is the visit
Opener repair$100–$350Gears, circuit board or chain
New opener installed$300–$900Unit, rail and installation
One damaged panel replaced$300–$1,100Price depends on whether the style is still made

These are national prices for one repair visit, with the technician's trip charge included. Forbes Home, the one guide that lists parts and labor separately, shows parts as a small fraction of each repair, which is why labor sets most of the price and why the state adjustment applies to the labor share. Spring replacement is priced on its own page.

Repair or replace?

A single repair rarely makes sense once several parts have failed at once. If the door is old, damaged in more than one panel, or needs springs, a cable and rollers in the same visit, compare the total with a new door on the garage door replacement page. Guides put a full replacement at $700-$2,700 for a single door and $1,000-$3,500 for a double.

Extras

On top of the repair
ItemTypical cost
Emergency or after-hours call-out$100–$300
New remote or keypad programmed$115–$300

An annual tune-up and inspection costs about $100-$250 and can catch a worn cable or roller before it fails.

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Is there a service charge, and is it waived if you go ahead with the repair?
  • Does the quote include parts, or only labor?
  • Are the springs, cable and rollers worn too, so they can be done in one visit?
  • What warranty comes with the parts and the labor?
  • If the door is old, what would a replacement cost?

Methodology and sources

We price each repair per visit from four published guides, take the middle of their lows, midpoints and highs, and adjust the labor share for your state's wages. Read how we estimate costs.
