Sprinkler system installation cost per zone

Installed price per zone, captured 2026-10-08
System typeInstalled priceGood to know
Underground spray system$500–$2,000Buried pipes and pop-up heads
Drip irrigation$300–$1,200Above-ground drip lines for beds and gardens

These are installed prices per zone, with the labor share adjusted for your state. Each zone is a group of heads on one valve, and a typical quarter-acre lawn uses about four to six of them. The guides disagree on prices per square foot and by lot size, but they agree on prices per zone, so we use that. Enter your number of zones for the project total.

What changes the price

Zones are the main driver, but the site matters too. Rocky or clay soil, long pipe runs, many beds or slopes and tight access add trenching time. A system that connects to a well or to a pressure-limited supply may need extra parts. Warm regions that do not freeze are cheaper to install because pipes can be shallower.

Extra costs to expect

Common extras
ItemTypical costWhen it applies
Smart or Wi-Fi controller$50–$300Adds scheduling and weather adjustments
Backflow preventer$450–$1,700Required by many towns
Rain or soil sensor$25–$50Prevents watering in wet weather
Permit$35–$200Some contractors include it in the quote

Annual winterizing and spring start-up are ongoing costs and are not included. Ask whether the quote covers sod repair after trenching and how the zones will be laid out.

Questions to ask before you hire

  • How many zones will my lot need, and how were they planned?
  • Is the backflow preventer and permit included?
  • Which controller is included, and can it be upgraded?
  • Who repairs the lawn after trenching?
  • What is the warranty on parts and labor?

Methodology and sources

We price each system type per zone, adjust the labor share for your state's construction wages, and price the controller, backflow preventer, sensor and permit separately. Read how we estimate costs.

What each source reports

Our estimate does not rely on any single page. This table lists each page we used and the figures it reports, so you can see where the ranges come from.

Common questions about sprinkler system installation costs

How much does sprinkler system installation cost?

A typical job (4-zone underground system) comes to about $3,700 nationally, within a range of $2,040 to $8,200. Use the calculator above to adjust for your state, the options you choose and any extras.

Where do these prices come from?

They come from 3 published cost pages from 3 publishers, last checked Oct 8, 2026. We report what those pages say and do not invent figures; the table above shows each source.

How does my state change the estimate?

The labor part of the price is scaled by the average wage for the relevant trade in your state, using Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Materials and equipment are not adjusted.

Why might a contractor's quote differ from this estimate?

A quote reflects your specific scope, access, local demand and what the contractor includes. Ask for line items rather than a single total so you can compare bids on the same basis.
