Toilet installation cost by type
| Toilet type | Installed price |
|---|---|
| Two-piece (most common) | $250–$800 |
| One-piece | $350–$1,250 |
| Comfort height (ADA) | $350–$1,050 |
| Wall-hung | $800–$3,200 |
| Smart or bidet toilet | $650–$3,600 |
A two-piece toilet is the cheapest and the easiest to install, since the bowl and tank are light enough for one person to handle. One-piece toilets are heavier and typically add $50 to $100 in labor. Wall-hung and smart toilets cost the most: a wall-hung model needs a carrier frame secured inside the wall, which adds two to four extra hours of labor and the cost of opening and patching the wall.
What the price includes
A straightforward swap, removing the old toilet and setting the new one on a fresh wax ring, takes a plumber one to two hours. Labor alone typically runs $150 to $450, and plumbers commonly charge $75 to $150 per hour. Replace the wax ring (about $3–$10) and the supply line (about $5–$20) at the same time. Ask whether removal and disposal of the old toilet is included in the quote.
Save money: buy the toilet yourself
One cost guide notes plumbers typically mark up toilets by 15% to 30%. Buying from a home center and hiring the plumber for labor only usually costs $150 to $250. A two-piece elongated, comfort-height toilet in the $200 to $400 range gets you comfort height and WaterSense certification without a luxury price.
What can push the price up
- Moving the toilet: relocating it to a different wall means re-routing the drain line, about $600–$1,900 in labor.
- Surprises under the old toilet: a damaged flange, a rotted subfloor or an old shutoff valve that needs replacing all raise the bill, and they come up more often than most people expect. No guide gives a single price for them, so ask the plumber how they charge for it.
- Bidet and smart features: extra electrical and water-line work adds labor on top of the higher unit price.
Questions to ask before you hire
- Is the toilet included, or am I supplying it?
- Does the price include removing and disposing of the old toilet, a new wax ring and supply line?
- What will you charge if you find a damaged flange or subfloor?
- Is the rough-in size (distance from the wall to the drain) the right one for the toilet I'm buying?

Where do these prices come from?
They come from 7 published cost pages from 7 publishers, last checked Oct 2, 2026. We report what those pages say and do not invent figures; the table above shows each source.
How does my state change the estimate?
The labor part of the price is scaled by the average wage for the relevant trade in your state, using Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Materials and equipment are not adjusted.
Why might a contractor's quote differ from this estimate?
A quote reflects your specific scope, access, local demand and what the contractor includes. Ask for line items rather than a single total so you can compare bids on the same basis.
