Hot tub cost by type and size
| Hot tub type or size | Installed price | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Inflatable hot tub | $400–$1,500 | Portable and the cheapest |
| Plug-and-play hot tub (runs on a standard outlet) | $2,000–$6,000 | Runs on a standard outlet, so no new circuit |
| Hot tub for 2 to 4 people | $2,000–$8,000 | A smaller tub for two to four people |
| Hot tub for 5 to 6 people | $3,000–$15,000 | The middle of the market |
| Hot tub for 7 or more people | $4,000–$20,000 | Seats seven or more |
| Swim spa | $10,000–$40,000 | A long tub you can swim in place in |
The guides agree on the order but not on the ceiling. HomeGuide's ranges run above Fixr's at the top for the larger tubs, equal them for 2-4 person tubs and swim spas, and fall below them for inflatables. Fixr labels its figures as installed cost, though its text calls its inflatable prices materials alone, so we used Fixr to cross-check the ranges and let HomeGuide set the top. Angi puts the average for a new hot tub of any type at $3,400. Thumbtack's page lists 6-person tubs at $5,000 to $8,000.
What changes the price
- Type. Inflatable, plug-and-play, standard tub and swim spa sit in clearly different price bands.
- Number of seats. A tub for more people costs more, and HomeGuide's ranges widen as the tub grows.
- Power. A tub that plugs in is cheapest.
- The spot it sits on. A concrete pad or foundation is a separate job.
- Delivery. Getting the tub into the yard costs extra, and a crane adds more if it has to go over the house.
- Where you live. The calculator adjusts the labor share for your state's electrician wages.
Extras to expect
| Item | Typical cost | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Hookup to an existing outlet or panel | $120–$500 | The tub sits next to a circuit that already works |
| New 240V circuit and wiring | $800–$4,200 | The tub needs its own circuit or a subpanel |
| Concrete pad or foundation | $500–$2,500 | There is no level, solid spot |
| Delivery and placement | $200–$500 | Most deliveries |
| Crane | $200–$1,500 | No side access to the yard |
| Permit and inspection | $100–$300 | Where one is required |
| Removing an old tub | $250–$400 | Replacing an existing hot tub |
The wiring is the biggest variable. If your panel is full or too small, see electrical panel upgrade cost. Thinking bigger? Inground pool cost covers pools with a built-in spa. A level, solid base is sometimes a small deck: see deck repair cost.
Questions to ask before you buy
- Does the price include delivery, the cover and the steps?
- Does the tub plug into a standard outlet or need a dedicated 240V circuit?
- Is my panel big enough, or does it need a subpanel?
- What base does the tub need, and who builds it?
- What is the warranty on the shell, the heater and the pumps?

How does my state change the estimate?
The labor part of the price is scaled by the average wage for the relevant trade in your state, using Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Materials and equipment are not adjusted.
Why might a contractor's quote differ from this estimate?
A quote reflects your specific scope, access, local demand and what the contractor includes. Ask for line items rather than a single total so you can compare bids on the same basis.
