Interior door installation cost by type
| Door type | Installed price | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Slab door (hung in an existing frame) | $120–$500 | Hung in a frame that is already there |
| Prehung door (door and frame together) | $170–$1,000 | The door comes already hung in its own frame |
| Pocket door | $500–$2,500 | Slides into a gap built into the wall |
| Barn door | $200–$1,800 | Slides on a track mounted above the opening |
| Bifold door (closet) | $45–$356 | Folds in half; common on closets |
| Sliding or bypass door | $300–$1,600 | Slides along a track beside another door or panel |
The guides agree on the order but not on the size. Angi's ranges run above HomeGuide's for slab and prehung doors, and each contradicts itself in places: HomeGuide lists pre-hung labor in two different ranges, and Angi lists French doors at $600 to $6,000 in its table and $250 to $500 in its text, so French doors are not in the calculator. Bob Vila puts a general interior door at $375 to $1,125 and a bifold door at $150 to $500.
Cost for several doors
| Doors | Slab | Prehung | Bifold |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $120–$500 | $170–$1,000 | $50–$360 |
| 3 | $360–$1,500 | $510–$3,000 | $140–$1,070 |
| 5 | $600–$2,500 | $850–$5,000 | $230–$1,780 |
| 10 | $1,200–$5,000 | $1,700–$10,000 | $450–$3,560 |
What changes the price
- Door type. A slab door hung in an existing frame is the simplest job, and a pocket door is the hardest.
- Number of doors. The total is the price per door times the number of doors, though installers often discount a whole-house job.
- Frame. A prehung door includes a new frame; a slab door uses the old one.
- Hardware and trim. Knobs, hinges and casing are often priced separately.
- The opening. A door that does not fit the old opening means resizing or reframing it.
- Where you live. The calculator adjusts the labor share for your state's carpenter wages.
Extras to expect
| Item | Typical cost | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware | $20–$200 per door | New knobs, levers or hinges |
| Trim and casing | $90–$155 per door | New casing around the opening |
| New door frame | $113–$370 per door | The old frame is damaged or the wrong size |
| Removing the old door | $20–$80 per door | When it is not in the quote |
| Painting the door and frame | $75–$150 per door | Unfinished doors |
| Widening the opening | $300–$2,500 | The door is bigger than the old opening |
For the front of the house, see front door replacement cost, patio door replacement cost and storm door installation cost. Trim goes with baseboard installation cost, and painting with interior painting cost. A door in a bigger remodel is covered by bathroom remodel cost.
Questions to ask before you hire
- Is the price for the door and the labor, or the labor alone?
- Is the frame included, or am I reusing the old one?
- Are the hardware, trim and removal of the old door in the price?
- Is there a discount for doing several doors in one visit?
- What happens if the opening is out of square?
Methodology and sources
We price each door type from published guides, take the middle of their lows, midpoints and highs, and adjust the labor share for your state's wages. Bob Vila is used as an independent cross-check. Read how we estimate costs.

Common questions about interior door installation costs
How much does interior door installation cost?
A typical job (prehung door) comes to about $450 nationally, within a range of $170 to $1,000. Use the calculator above to adjust for your state, the options you choose and any extras.
How much does it cost to install a prehung interior door?
About $170–$1,000 per door, with the door and frame together. HomeGuide puts the national average for any interior door at $344 and Angi at $802.
How much does it cost to replace a slab door?
About $120–$500 per door when the existing frame is kept.
How much does a pocket door cost to install?
About $500–$2,500. A pocket door has to be built into the wall, which is why it costs several times as much as a prehung door.
How much does it cost to install a barn door?
About $200–$1,800 per door. Angi runs above the other two guides at the top, at $2,500.
How much does it cost to install a bifold closet door?
About $45–$356 per door.
How much does it cost to replace all the interior doors in a house?
Ten prehung doors cost about $1,700–$10,000. With new hardware and trim on each, the total comes to $2,800–$13,550.
How much does it cost to widen a doorway?
About $300–$2,500. HomeGuide puts it at $500 to $2,500 and Angi at $300 to $2,500.
How much does a new door frame cost?
About $113–$370 per door when the old frame has to be replaced.
How much of the cost is labor?
Angi puts labor at about 50% of the total, so a prehung door and its installation split roughly evenly between the door and the carpenter.
Where do these prices come from?
They come from 3 published cost pages from 3 publishers, last checked Oct 9, 2026. We report what those pages say and do not invent figures; the table above shows each source.
How does my state change the estimate?
The labor part of the price is scaled by the average wage for the relevant trade in your state, using Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Materials and equipment are not adjusted.
Why might a contractor's quote differ from this estimate?
A quote reflects your specific scope, access, local demand and what the contractor includes. Ask for line items rather than a single total so you can compare bids on the same basis.
